Context
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a leading marine ecolabel which promises consumers a guarantee of ‘certified sustainable seafood’. However, its credibility has been eroded by numerous controversial certifications and its slow pace of change.
Our activity
Seahorse coordinates the On The Hook campaign: a wide-ranging coalition of expert stakeholders united by their concern about the standards being set by the MSC and in their call for reform. As part of our work, we conducted a major external review of the MSC.
Our impact
In 2022, On The Hook published and promoted a roadmap of urgent recommendations for the MSC to regain credibility and achieve its vision of ‘oceans teeming with life’.
On The Hook’s campaigning has helped raise the standards of the MSC, securing a ban on unsustainable compartmentalised fisheries from the MSC programme and strengthening of requirements to prevent shark finning in certified fisheries.
